May 2020 - New music playlist

Whilst 2020 just keeps getting crazier and the world is either working from home, furloughed or live streaming, I'm here grinding the 9-5+. The emails and PR coming through to us thick and fast, I'm struggling to keep up with all the great tunes. Luckily our Mr Foxon and Riche are on hand to listen, enjoy & post on ALOMR behalf.

That said, I've been compiling a list of tracks that have got my feet tapping in May both submissions to us and those we find whilst perusing the net.

I've got a bunch of music to take you on this journey. Starting you off slow with some mellow alternative indie, moving through to pick up the pace with some modern Indie, a touch of metal and little Punk.

Starting with something chilled and relaxing that I missed in my last playlist

(Alternative)
Mehro - Perfume. This beautifully graceful acoustic indie/alt romantic oozes 70s undertones perfectly balanced melody with a smooth baseline that almost reminds you of your heartbeat, it seems all of this is designed you make you feel in the song. Mehro's vocals get deep into you and I'd go as far as saying this Californian is your next ASMR fix both audibly and visually!

Mehro frustratingly only has one track online and it will crave you wanting more, which might explain why he's topped over 1.5m Spotify plays! He's hands on in the production of the video too and I'd suggest checking it out too!
Mehro

Alex Luca - Only the River another title that's hitting big numbers and Alex also only has one track up. This Italian born now Liverpudlian pianist has another emotion grabbing voice bringing a jazzy alternative beautifully calm song to just enjoy.

Owen Denvir - This Could Be Love. This Belfast singer is about to release his 2nd EP Bones and this is the first single off it. This acapella Indie/Pop ballad is true reflection of what an artist can do with their own voice, as so much of the track comes from samples of his own voice and audio glitching in his home during lockdown.

(Indie/Electro/Punk)
Birthday Card - Radio Star. Moving into a little alt-electro-pop from Buckinghamshire quintet band Birthday Card. They've got a nice Daft Punk-esq and MGMT feel, this is their latest track released onast Friday.

Blazar - Better. Raising the tempo, these guys dropped into our inbox, I don't have a huge amount of info but they have a Gorillaz vibe to them, tho it's a poppy Gorillaz meets Justin Timberlake! It's different but in a good way.

The Reytons - Headache. Here we go, one of our favs! The Yorkshire lads with another anthem packed with catch lyrics and this lovely rifts synonymous to the the East- England indie we know and love! ... Coz I don't need the 'eadache n I don't need the agro 'gro 'gro 'gro
The Reytons

JAEKO - Cold Hard Killer. Another DM from the PR world we're so grateful for, otherwise we might not have heard thie newcomer as quick. The progressive rifts and cratchy chorus will have you singing this indie anthems hook for days in end. This one came out a few months ago but it's new in playlists. Keep an eye out for a little more from that's guys soon.

No ID - I Don't Know. Here's another band you'll find yourself digging into more. The St Ives indie band puts The Strokes and Arctic's as influences and this 5 piece let that show. Personally I'm loving some of the sweet bass lines running through this track and that build up after the bridge, wow!

(Let's ramp up the grunge!)
False Heads - Ink (off debut Album It's All There by you're Dreaming). Ahhh this came out a few weeks since now and I can't not include it. If you haven't read our previous posts on FH check them out, reviews, gigs and interview all in the archives! These three bring some serious punch live and their album is a great representation of modern music taking influence from across the spectrum. Ink is the latest installment of beauty! If you have the opportunity (in the post-covid world) to see False Heads get your grungy pit on and get a ticket!
False Heads' Debut Album

Parallel Motion - Slave. Florida based high octane modern metal band. Parallel motion provide a melodic catchy energy for when you want a little Metal in your life.

I've still got plenty in the bag, so don't go too far.

For now,
M x

Mike Herrera: Songs and Stories - The DanceHouse Manchester

OK be prepared for full on fanboy mode...

Fanboy Background
MxPx, a huge influence on my punk fandom, so much so it obviously created my username and blog sign off name. I was originally introduced to MxPx Doin' Time in the late 90's by my best friend (and fellow sometimes blogger) Richard.

We started our early teens heavily into music 80% of the time was Green Day, Blink-182, Mest, MxPx, Millencolin, Goldfinger, New Found Glory, Anti-Flag, Offspring, Stiff Little Fingers...heck the list goes on! But there are a few bands that top the list, forever in our playlists and often start most our nights out or long car rides to gigs, especially... MxPx - Punk Rawk Show and Doin' Time, was perfect for our early teen rebellions.

We've seen so many of those bands countless times at festivals and gigs but over the years I've continued to support Mest and MxPx via cd, mp3, sharing and recently crowdfunding, fully expecting them to just be bands of Nostalgia and bands i only ever get to listen via some form of media.
Last year we met Tony Lovato and saw Mest in the UK, ticking off all but 1 of those original teen influence bands. It was amazing to stand a talk with Tony, humbling and awesome... leaving 1 more person/band.

MxPx have always been there, never been able to get to see them live. During the crowdfunding of the self title MxPx last year I so wished to be able to pay for the personal appearance reward... if i didn't have a house and commitments I truly would have, but this is real life, I messaged MxPx, PxPx and Mike directly to get the band to tour the UK! Heck I scowered US and Canada gigs to see if I could get to them to coincide with some of the trips I already had out there.

I had given the hope of seeing, let alone, meeting MxPx/Mike.

Fast forward, Fireball 2019
Less Than Jake and Goldfinger billed at the Ritz Manchester, I want to go, but realistically I saw LTJ in august and Goldfinger a few years back. Money was low, my best mate was days away from his 2nd child and I was reside to not going alone..... until I saw that Mike was actually bassist for Goldfinger now!! Not only that, he was bringing is Songs and Stories gig to the UK 1x ticket, Booked to fireball.

I also got ready at 9am for the Songs and Stories sales release... boom, tickets 1 and 2 we're mine :D (just needed a buddy, to go with or id go alone to be honest)
Fireball... going alone, awesome bands and if i get to at least see Mike that's going to be cool enough.I go alone, enjoy the fucking awesomeness of GF and  LTJ. 2 songs from the end of Goldfingers set Mike says we'll be at the Merch stand after this... I've already bought a GF shirt 30mins ago but fuck I head over to that stand immediately... Ha, sweaty and happy I met Mike!  (See last week's blog)

Fast forward 6 days;
Mike Herrera Songs and Stories

It was a very intimate acoustic gig, maybe 150 people, we're sat front row (at this point it took my Mother with me - long story which will become clear soon - shes a music lover but new to Mike Herrera, although had listened to my punk collections for 20+ years).

Listening to just Mike, his guitar and some amazing stories - from the influences of old songs to new songs, from drinking tequila and eating Taco Bell, to being told his daughter loves him 'All of it'.

I was not sure if this was going to be twee or awkward, I just didn't know what to expect. It was neither of that, Mike was a true performer, either on stage with 10 other people with a crowd full of rowdy punk rockers or alone onstage with a handful of fans - He knows how to create a great time. Major Respect.

The Stories were Topical, Relevant, Recent (eg saving 2 people from drowning in the canal in Manchester) and what really got me was the Mental Health, the struggles we all go through - and Mikes recognition of this... more over by doing a beautiful rendition of Millencolin's No Cigar (I think I fell in love with this)
A
[I didnt record much, but this as so worth it - Apologies I did this in vertical for Instagram story- though the horizontal ones will remain private anyway]

Also got a cool snippet of Doin' Time and Lets Ride, but those are both for my Buddies would couldn't be here due to New Family arrivals!!

I don't want to go too much into the show because I think you should experience this yourself, either as MxPx fans, Mike Herrera Fans, or just genuine Music Lovers. There is still time to catch the London Gig or I'm sure this will be available in some other form of media in the future.

The best part is Mike's love of the fans, to get out there and publised his meeting spots/time - without charging 'meet and greets' bullshit.

(More over he did something extremely special I'll post a little later on socials and then re-share here later )

Overall - 10/10
Excellent mix of well delivered stories & Perfect performance and vocals!

Favourites (if I had to)

Lets Ride - Reminds me of my time in the Rockies earlier this year
Doin Time - All Time Favourite of mine
No Cigar - Just wow, the story and influence on Mike, it really hit home.

[My Mum's] Late Again, she relates to never being on time (In fairness she was ready at 6pm exactly so shes got better now x)

Cheers Mike, hope to see you and the rest of MxPx real soon.

For Now, Mx

Fireball 2019! Goldfinger & Less Than Jake

This was my first actual gig I've been to alone, I've seen bands by myself at festivals, but never  full gig alone... why haven't I done this before? IT WAS AMAZING.

Having seen Less Than Jake at Slamdunk and Goldfinger not long back, as well as trying to save money I almost gave this a miss. Then I saw Mike Herrera was playing on bass and he also announced an acoustic gig at the Dancehouse... Well I couldn't say no, ticket bought and it was worth it. Not managed to see MxPx live, despite the huge influence Doin Time and Punk Rawk Show has had on my life, so I needed to get there.

I mean Punk, ska, LTJ, Goldfinger at the Ritz with a little bit of MxPx touch. There. There. There! It was everything you expect and more, and finally got to hear Rest Of My Life live! Amazing.

I'm going to sign off now but expect more next week

Sisteray - Sisteray Said EP

There's several things I like about blogging, apart from the fact it's a great way of storing those memories of gigs that fade over the years, it is the meeting new bands and listening to new music!

Today... Punk Rock, Mod-revival, 4 Piece, Sisteray and their soon to be released EP 'Sisteray Said'.

The EP is released under Vallance Records, produced by Jonathan Hucks (who's worked with the likes of False Heads) and has guest vocals too from Lucie Barat and Kat Five.

Wannabes, available on Spotify now, continues the theme of 15 Minutes. Another hit out modern day society, with a hit of upbeat guitars rifts and a catchy chorus.

Rumour Mill, kicks right in with a marching drum beat leading into sweet, impacting, keys rift! The chorus is head bouncing and makes even the most hungover head want to get up move! Well harmonised and produced track, which has a rollercoaster of ups and downs! 4minutes of lush listening, if this track doesn't hit the charts I'll be surprised.

Algorithm Prison, also available on Spotify, a hit out at social media companies and their mass farming and data selling! It's got one of those hook bridges you'll be chanting at everyone you want to fuck off.

Sisteray Said, the title track, starting with progressive bass line and punk distorted guitars. WMCYW! Well it's only 2mins long and I wanted more more more! But that's the only pit fall. The track is another chanting, stick in your head chorus. A well designed and constructed track.

Overall the EP is a beautiful modern punk rock piece, it's showing why the band is taking the festivals and industry by storm in just 18 months.
Get it pre-ordered, get a tour ticket, enjoy!

The EP is out 7th September, on all media formats CD, Cassette, Digital, Vinyl etc. There is also a limited edition Vinyl for you retros out there.
The launch party is Thursday the 6th, in London, and is also followed by a UK tour

MEST!

Seeing Mest, for me, was a teenage dream come true. My good friend introduced me to them when we were early teens. Now, that's a good few years ago, yet the feeling I get from music is still the same. Front row at the Alma in Bolton transported me back to that time. A time when punk rock and pop punk really got me, with each and every shouty anthem i listened to, I felt alive, young and free.

I'd never actually seen Mest before but it was everything I expected, everything I wanted.

When we got home sleeping was a feat: ears ringing, belly full of rum, Cadillac replaying over in my head. Alive, young and free!

Punk rock as fuck. 4 bands. 4 really brilliant bands and although the people count didn't dip into 3 figures, the atmosphere more than made up for it.

Mest! Bolton August 2018

When I saw this Event I nearly fell off my chair. Mest, MEST! When it comes to pop-punk Mest sits at the top of our list, and Favourites from the late 90s post-punk with Goldfinger, Millencolin, MxPx, Anti-flag.

20years of good music, but circumstances fought against us with seeing Mest live. Until they announced a tour... with a gig at our hometown - Bolton.
There was no consideration, I went on and booked 4 tickets immediately. Me, Richard, Chris & Jen.

Hosted by Rawcus Events (check them out!) The venue was the Alma, a small venue with a capacity no more than 150 - although the tickets sales unfortunately didn't sell out, or fortunately for us, as we got to meet and chat with all the bands and particularly Tony Lovato!

 Michael, Tony Lovato, Richard

Zapian were good, decent way to start the day. Shame to miss the earlier bands but it was all about JD and we were mostly there for Mest anyway.

Sitting down listening to Zapiain, the venue was empty with just Me & Richard and the other band's members. Spotting a Millencolin tattoo started a conversation with Arron from Red Winter (Apologies if I get the names wrong, I've stalked the Facebook page for band members names) the guys were friendly and happy to divulge a few stories and tales from previous gigs. All I'm going to say is if they guys have wine on the stage, just don't stand right at the front unless you can duck inadvertent roundhouses!

The Liverpudlians, Red Winter, hit the stage with decent tunes and witty banter, engaging the crowd and really doing the Supports job of warming everyone up. It's no wonder they've had the chance to support some big names (such as Blink-182).
'Garry', the guy at the back in the red shirt, certainly enjoyed it.

I really like Nobody's Hero and the Some Friend you Were.

A post shared by A Life Of Music Rocks (@alifeofmusicrocks) on

The lads were good and sounded much clearer than my video (phone recording next to a speaker was always a bad idea).
I can tell you they are in our vision now and we'll be tracking their gigs.

The day continued with Kill The Masters, fast paced, not too serious, Punk band from Bolton. Chris' run down does more justice so head over and check out his post (Here). We headed over to the bar and heard an acoustic version of Jaded coming from a side room, peeking in we saw Tony & Adrian playing, turns out this was for Meet & Greets so we stepped away (after the song).

Slimboy came one, Swiss pop-punk band, having heard a few songs we were excited for these. They are good, really, really good. Richard and Chris elobrated more so want more info head in that direction! :P

During all of this I Adrian (I later found out the name) came over and said Hi. I fucked up, made a terrible, drunken, shameful mistake if asking if he was a roadie helping out ... (Earth swollow me whole please)... Nope turns out he's a guitarist in Mest. Should have checked out the touring band more!
Anyway turns out Adrian is very friendly guy and lead singer of 'Assuming We Survive' - Turns out these guys are fucking awesome, check them out, similar sound to Fall Out Boy... But heavier and without the Twee lyrics, actually not like Fall Out Boy, AWS are a true pop/punk outfit in buzzing listening to this back catalogue!!

Over to Mest, we had the opportunity to chat to Tony a few times before the set. Needless to say I was buzzing. We stumbled upon Meat 18years ago when Richard mistook What's the Dillio for What's the Dildo - then we found Wasting Time, and Mo Money, a year later UnknownDestination.
We've buzzed for Mest for years and the on/off band has meant we haven't had the chance to see them. Then it happened, in our home town and we were on it.

The guys were amazing, smashing out classics from Cadillac to Jaded to Long Days, Long Nights. We spent the entire time singing, moshing, circling, it was amazing and everything I ever expected.

A post shared by A Life Of Music Rocks (@alifeofmusicrocks) on

It only got better from there, after we spent a little more time with Tony, giving him cigs, talking about music and the tour.
He told us about a little boy he met the night before, a 7 year old, he was telling us about him refunding the ticket money for his mum to buy him some toys for Christmas. Really showed a side a him that was more than just a pop-punk legend.

We loved Tony before, now it's on another level.
Hats off to you! You're something else! Class!

I can't really top that, we shook hands with Tony and Adrian and took our leave.

Shaking Hands and Hey Jude

Wow what a night (and afternoon) Saturday was, went to see Mest at a small venue in Bolton with several support acts.

We didn't go with our blogging for ALOMR heads on, (I know I know we should be telling you all everything we do, every minute of every day, but I don't and we won't) however, we saw some great bands so I felt it would be rude not to share my thoughts, no doubt the other three will pull some absolute blinders of analysis when they get round to it, oh yes the four of us were all together for the first time at a gig since the old boys 30th!

I went mainly to listen to Mest (obvs), Slimboy and Red Winter (much more on these guys to come). We got there at 4ish and the first band had already been and gone (my fault i was given the option of getting a taxi or having another JD).

The second band were playing when we entered and were just wrapping up there set, next up were Zapiain, we had listened to a few of there songs before hand and am sure were very good but for some reason its a little hazy this part of the afternoon so I cant really give you much more than that....sorry.

(Red Winter - ALOMR photos)

I know Michael has touched on Red Winter but I liked them that much I am going to touch them again, hopefully not with a roundhouse kick to the face, we had a good chat with the lads before they went on stage, I insisted they needed to change the lyrics in one of their songs, sadly I had the wrong band and not for the first time in my life had cocked up (however another member of the ALOMR team made an even bigger balls up with a different band later on in the day... not sure if I will drop him in it or not yet).

Once the guys got on stage and sorted out the sounds (Well done to the sound tech at the Alma by the way he did a great job of getting the bands on stage tuned in quickly!) they quickly thrashed through 6 fantastic skater punk hits, they had some good banter with the crowd and each other, they remind me of Blink around the take of your pants and jacket era, maybe a touch heavier but with the same fun and bounce that they had throughout there gigs.We will definitely be going to see these guys again and soon.

Kill the Masters - Yeah (courtesy of Michael)

A new band to us that we hadn't heard before were Kill the Masters, these guys are angry punk, they are coming at a time when it is probably right this particular style to resurface. The group is a three piece outfit with the guitarist and bassist switching instruments and vocals throughout and a solid drummer who holds it all together.
They have some great songs with my favourite being Drugs, its a catchy song that even the Mums can sing along to even if the subject matter isn't the cleanest and did an Usher cover that sounded awesome.
The guys are currently doing their first EP and should have it launched by December, keep an eye out for it although am sure we will give it a mention when it hits!

Slimboy, I don't know what to say about these guys, they are brilliant, yes I am a little biased as they picked me out to say thanks for singing along (I am the annoying dude on the crowd who sings along to every song in my monotone voice) and then got me to sing Hey Jude on the microphone with them.

Their songs Sorrow, Believe in You and Whatever are there best in my mind but give them a listen and tell us which you think. I was told they have just finished touring with the Ataris so I am sure they are destined for big things and I hope to see them again soon leading there own show.

Slimboy - ALOMR photos

I would also like to point out that I did not take any videos or pictures at the show as I was having to much fun watching some great bands and would like to say thanks to Rawcus events for pulling this together, it was unbelievable to see these bands coming to our home town playing the last bastion of rock The Alma.

Finally onto the main event of Mest, wow 18 years I had waited to see them live and they did not disappoint, from start to finish I was wrapped up in a punk plethora that I still have a fuzzy feeling from now. Tony Lovato slams as stood about a foot Infront of me and all that came between us was a stood up pallet, I thought I wouldn't get any closer but the band were awesome and stayed around after the gig shaking hands and chatting to us all (even though all I could do was state in awe at a band I have lived since being 12 years old) the guys are heading to the studio when they get back home and I for one can't wait to hear what they come up with and to obviously follow it up with another tour... Where I hope to see them supported by Red Winter and Kill the Masters!

False Heads - Less Is Better EP

Less Is Better... Unless the subject is new music, in which case less isn't always better... I mean, when it comes to False Heads, more is better! More is exactly what we now have.

A few months ago we caught up with Luke, Jake & Barney in Leeds on their single release Retina - check out the post and videos here. During our chat we spoke about what's next, Luke told us about the several Demos ready to be recorded and spoke of re-recording Retina for an EP version. Since then we waited, eagerly!

Well today the day came...

To start, a big thanks to These Bloody Thieves Records & the Lads for sending over a copy of the CD early. The EP is set for official Digital Release next month (21st September), with the single Yellow premiering on Radio X tonight at 10pm and release date is 24th August.

Once again I've got myself into the CD scenario! I literally only buy CDs to look at, the only player I have is Xbox, opting to stream nowadays. Thankfully my brother saved the day with an old laptop so I can relax, laydown, headphones in and listen uninterrupted.

The EP has 4 bouncing tracks:
Yellow
Retina (EP Version)
Help Yourself
Wrap Up

The overall production is a step up from previous releases. Less Is Better is a much larger sound, a more professional outfit, don't get me wrong we still have that grungy raw sound, it's like Gutter Press but with big fat shiny cherry on top.

If you wanna know more about each track, I've given run down below. If you wanna listen to this unadulterated without any outside interpretation then feel free to skip. EP and Tour details can be found on FalseHeads.com or @falseheads

Yellow
Keeping in with previous tracks Yellow is False Heads in and out. Starting with a lovely clean Indie rift that'd fit at home amongst a Strokes or Hives track, it smashed into a verse covered in grungy crack. The chorus is heavy in repetitive lyrics from Luke, whilst Barney harmonises smashing away at the drums. It's got catchy lyrics and progressive rifts you can really feel a development on the 'False Heads' sound from earlier EPs.

Retina
When the guys said they were going to redo Retina, I was worried. The single is nice, raw, a good grungy listen. Much of this has been retained, with a closer, bassier sound, in the EP version. It offers more sound, crisper notes, echos and cleaner effects - particularly the outro at 3minutes you can tell the production is just another level.

Help Yourself
Slowing the pace a little - don't be thinking Comfort Consumption slow tho, Help Yourself packs a punch more akin to All Eyes. There's another treat of catch hooks, and a pretty nifty build up which leads into a new sound from the lads, by the way of a progressive electro guitar rift! Very nice - hope to hear more like this, it really works well.

Wrap Up
Coming into this track with more progressive sounds it's followed with some really meaty rifts & a touch of vocal distort. This is the first time I've really focused on Jake's bass - it's really grabbed me, listening to it flow really gets the head going. There's a full 1minute and 30seconds which is lyric free with scales all over, individual parts, harmonised instrumentals - I really get the feeling that this song was constructed with a live performance in mind. You can really visualise Luke scaling the stage and throwing himself off ... finishing with another catchy lyrical build up and an 'Everyone Goes For It'-ending

Countdown to the Tour!

With thanks to Luke, Jake & Barney and Rob at TBTRecords.

Full details of availability and release dates at www.falseheads.com they're on all social media platforms too @falseheads. Where you can find details of their upcoming European tour in September/October. We're going to Manchester and Preston gigs.

Ask nicely they may send a copy out before release dates.

Michaels Mini #8 - Mega Announcements

Wow well 1st August was a good day for new Indie music. We have had some announcements from ALOMR favourites Weekend Debt and False Heads! Needless to say we are absolutely buzzing about it.

Weekend Debt are working on their 2nd EP and about to hit the studio and record it. I know many people are excited to hear that! #wishingmylifeaway

False Heads gave a glimmer of their new single Yellow a few weeks back, but yesterday announced the name and cover art of their next EP: Less Is Better.  Including release date of 24th August for Yellow and 21st September for the digital release of the EP.
False Heads also have a massive EU tour and launch party check out  www.falseheads.com for details.

Chris mentioned yesterday the sneak peak on Able's Army new single Private Eye, check out that Interview here: alifeofmusic.rocks - Able's Army Private Eye
We will drop a link for the track tomorrow.

Not forgetting West Lothian duo Pyro released their latest track Regret or Forget on Saturday. Check it out here. Spotify - Pyro

In other news.
A couple of hot albums released this past week Skate Punk legends MxPx released Kickstarter funded Self Titled album, and it is fucking mental! We are loving it! Contains everything you expect from the legend that is Mike Harrera and the 25years of MxPx; Fast paced, Heavy, Anthems, Memorable Lyrics (Its Friday Tonight, Tonight!) and the occasional slower paced track!

Synth Pop Stockportians Blossoms released their 2nd studio album Cool Like You, and UK tour went on sale and sold out very quickly. The Album already has massive hits from their singles 'I Can't Stand It' and 'There's A Reason Why'. Also a fan of the title track 'Cool Like You' which as a very Human League feel to it.

Post punk influencers Interpol released the 2nd track from Marauder, Number 10. It's pretty cool and offers more insights to their sound of this album.

Anyway that's all for now, more over the coming days. Excitement galore.

Michael's mini post #7 What a week for singles!

Well what a week it's been for me and for releases!
Over in my life I think Mike Skinner laid down the right lyrics - "It was supposed to be so easy..."
After all the interviews and new Job secured, life dropped another option (good options, but now I have hard decisions to make!)

Anyway over to the release! This week:

Alkaline Trio - Blackbird
Yonaka - Fired Up
MUSE - Something Human
Offspring - Down

Well Offspring's track goes a little intense, in an OTT way to start but later into the track it gets the decent Offspring we know.

Alkaline Trio! Well, it doesn't feel like that long since we heard from Matt (mainly because it's not, with his place firmly in Blink history now). It's certainly nice to hear Matt back with the gang, giving us the dark and somewhat depressing tones we're used to from recent Trio albums.

As for Muse... Well this track gives a different sound than the classic Muse. With the presence of Steel Drums Matt Bellamy calls it retro, it's certainly different! To be honest, it wouldn't be a miss in a Disney or Pixar film during some song break out! Take that as you will.

YONAKA, I love it! But I'm going to leave that one for Chris to tell you about later!

In other news False Heads laid down a glimpse of their latest track Yellow which we can't wait for, sounds awesome!
We also heard Able's Army are about to drop their next track and we can't wait to get on that!

Chris is going to take a deeper listen into Yonaka and Able's Army and relay back for all you excited people!

That's all for now!

Before I start to tell you the many reasons you should become obsessed with Bad Dream Fancy Dress, I want to say a massive thank you to Cat and Jeff from the band. It's been such a pleasure chatting to them all week, we have shared many laughs, and I feel I have had an exclusive look into what makes them tick. I have fallen a little bit in love with Cat, my wife wants to dress up as her for halloween. This article was such a pleasure to put together. They have reminded me why I joined this blog, and why I do what I do. Thank you.

Ok, enough about me.

Bad Dream Fancy Dress was the crazy creation of 2 party animals, Cally and Katz back in the 80s. They achieved fame with their explosive first album Choir Boys Gas, and the single Curry Crazy, available on Spotify for all you young’uns to go check out.

Now, 30 something years later, Cat Rees has decided to join forces with her partner, Jeff, and mate, Joe, and do it all again. We will find out why from the lady herself in our snazzy little interview.

What we have is the 10 track album, Space Goddess, a riot of genres all mixed together. Catchy pop along side infectious punk rock. Cute vocals sung with a stern Welsh middle finger. More sexual innuendo than a carry-on film, with a whole heap of female empowerment. All wrapped inside what could be the soundtrack for a 60s interstellar B-Movie that you want to watch over and over again. It's sexy, it's unapologetic, its political at times, but most of all it's so much fucking fun.

It carries on from where the band left off 3 decades ago. I urge you to go listen to it, it will improve your mood and make you wanna dance. It appeals to fans of Lady Gaga just as much as fans of The Misfits. The only people this won't appeal to is people who take themselves a little too seriously. Emo kids, stay away. Everyone else, strap in!

Let's hear it from the mouthpiece of the band though. Cat was kind enough to take the time for an exclusive interview. If you want to find out about her alien friends and what happened to her tickets to the Royal Wedding, keep reading.

...

ALOMR - First of all, welcome back. Many of our readers weren't even born when you started this insane creation. What made you think “Yes, the time for a new Bad Dream Fancy Dress record is now”?

Cat - To some extent it decided itself to re-birth through a bizarre set of events:

While I was making the first Album ‘Choir Boys Gas’ I had a part-time bar job at the Grand Hotel in Leigh-on-sea, where all the local musicians hung out (Dr. Feelgood, Eddie and the Hot Rods, Ian Dury) and I met a guitar player, organizing an anti-poll tax festival in Basildon, who wanted me to play live. Instead we ended up recording a single on an old eight track called ‘Moaning Mini’ which we sent to John Peel.

To cut a long story short he phoned us back and said he was NOT going to play it, as it wasn’t ‘ready’ material, but he liked us and asked us to send him the next recordings and he would play them. He kept true to his word playing Bad Dream Fancy Dress and Jeff’s band, Foreheads in a Fishtank. But Jeff and I split and never recorded any tracks together again until the Space Goddess Album.

We met up by chance twenty-two years later while I was being strangled, stabbed and disemboweled for a Channel 5 Jack the Ripper documentary and I told Jeff about the Bad Dream Fancy Dress facebook group which I’d recently joined and he agreed to film the Lemon Tart Video.

We then recorded a series of covers for the fans, Last Christmas, Happy Mondays ‘Step on You’ and 'The Party from El'. Then, Christmas day 2013 the River Medway decided to change course in the middle of the night passing through our front room and leaving us both destitute. In that darkest hour, a strange man knocked at our door offering us a shower and some strange Jewish, Italian, Irish stew he’d made, and following copious amounts of alcohol, we were invited to jam in his recording studio, and the first song BREATHE was started (first to start last to finish).

Then my inner ‘Diva within’ journey began. The Space Goddess song, was followed by Film Noir and The Longing. Some songs were planned; Tokyo Toy was written deliberately to create Bubble Gum Punk, in the vain of the original Bad Dream Fancy Dress single ‘Curry Crazy’ which had done well in Japan.

Now for the boring bit, my health deteriorated. My feet were rebuilt, I had a spine fusion operation that left me in a wheelchair, and lots of drugs to curb the pain. The recording process for the album slowed for a while, when, again by chance, Christmas 2016 a doctor in Cardiff sent me to have my hips x-rayed. They had completely disintegrated and they wanted to operate straight away, so a decision was made to finish the vocals on the ten most completed songs. Andromeda (Fifth Element extravaganza), Typing Pool of Love (Retro Fun), Samhain (Something Darker), Route 69 (Suzi Quatro road trip) and Morpheus, which captured my sporadic presence on planet earth at that time.

ALOMR - If I had to describe your music to an alien, and I suspect you have run into a couple of them, I'd say your music is bubblegum pop with plenty of sex wrapped up in a punk rock catsuit. How would you describe your sound, and what inspires you, musically?

Cat - Well I love your description. Especially the Punk Rock Cat suit!

We tell stories. We love exciting visuals, old films and retro images. Counter moods the juxtaposition of rhythms with light and dark pattern. We enjoy satire, pain, joy, innuendo, and layers on many levels of sound. We don't just do a single genre. The songs have to have something to say, an energy. It’s about empowerment, regardless of sex, gender, appearance or age. Music should talk to everyone, self-expression, self exploration and always entertaining, there’s nothing worse than being dull.

ALOMR - That's exactly what this blog is all about. Why we started this.

Cat - We don't like the current homogenized X factor warbling, musical happy meals, where most of the contestants end up in rehab singing someone else’s words to someone else’s tune. We want passion! It’s about bands trying to be different not all the same. A band should seek its own unique voice. There are no personalities in the industry anymore. At least back in the nineties we had the likes of Jarvis Cocker. We might not like Liam Gallagher, who is increasingly becoming a parody of himself, but at least he hasn't sold his soul, at least he’s still vaguely interesting. What ever happened to Music scene Manchester back in the 90’s needs to be re-discovered, X factor was a crime against humanity. Simon Cowell should be sent to the Hague.

ALOMR - Can’t argue with that!
There was a massive, like proper massive 25+ year gap between the last album and Space Goddess. How easy was it to pick up where you left off? How did you manage to keep the distinctive sound of the band after such a long time away?

Cat - I’m the only original band member. But we tried to capture the original energy, lots of loose takes and spontaneity, especially on the vocal. Followed by the hard work, I lay the keyboards and virtual instruments and Jeff and Joe did the guitars. I choose a more grown up direction, no good denying twenty-five years of life. We were ‘labeled’ as school girls on Choir Boys Gas. I’ll label myself this time, this little girl has grown up to be a ‘space bag’.

ALOMR - Space Bag? Love it. It seems you speak fluent innuendo, do you also speak any alien languages?

Cat - Oh you are awful.. how very dare you! But yes I do have a close friend who is a Klingon who insisted on translating the lyrics. He’s also teaching me Klingon sign language, which apparently you can get arrested for on most galactic planets if used in Public.

English is actually my second language, I know some people consider Welsh an alien language but I only use my native tongue a little on Samhain. We like to explore languages we also love nonsense rhythm Roald Dahl-isms, if we can't figure out the words we just make the words up, it's all about context and having fun with language.

ALOMR - Space Goddess is a tailor made soundtrack to the best sci-fi b-movie of all time. It's full of whirrs and beeps, sultry vocals and a ton of sexual innuendo. Can you give us a little insight into the creation of the album?

Cat - We sort of answered that earlier and all the songs are so different. But Space Goddess was inspired by the ‘Barbarella’ opening title sequence. It's a housewife breaking free from the domestic chains in her head. Breaking free from conformity, negative relationships. Re-discovering sexual freedom and breaking the transgender chains. Holding her vibrator high and proud instead of hiding it away in the closet. It's a ‘yes you can’ song, we can all break free, to infinity and beyond!

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘Creation’, but we have a spare room which we call the Fishtank Studio it has Pro Tools. It’s full of instruments, Keyboards and guitars and it has a toilet tent as an improvised vocal booth, but it seems to work. I write Keyboards and melodies, occasionally synth bass. Jeff plays guitar, samples drums and twiddles his knobs (Oh yer) and Joe occasionally turns up from Ireland and adds some musical genius to the plot. Lyrics are written on scraps of paper all over the house and random Jams are recorded on the phone. But we always see the songs and have ideas for songs first, recording tracks happens down the process.

ALOMR - My favourite track on the album is Route 69. What's yours?

Cat - It's difficult you don't have favourite children and it always depends what mood I’m in. By and large my favourite song is the one I’m currently working on, so at present it's a song called ‘OMG We Thought We Were So Retro’ which gives a nod and wink to Prefab Sprout. The idea for a song is the most important bit.

ALOMR - What's your favourite dinosaur?

Cat - A Orgasmasaur or Uranusrexsus

ALOMR - Are you the hero or the villain?

Cat - Neither, I’m a witch. However about eight years ago I did play a villain in a Welsh soap opera called Pobol Y Cwm. I’m the welsh equivalent of Phil Mitchel, but in leopard skin outfits, called Judith, a very naughty drug dealer and gangster. So young children used to flee from me in terror when I was seen on the streets of Cardiff. My character finally got sent to prison in a big Crown Court trial and as far as I’m aware I’m still in prison now.

ALOMR - Did you ever find your plasma gun from behind the sofa?

Cat - Yes, along with the bloody amazon Stick! A time travel belt, a big red button (Bigger than Trumps!) and my invite to the Royal wedding, which I promptly stuck back behind the sofa.

ALOMR - What's next for you and the boys?

Cat - First some videos. We like filming videos. The next Album was started when I finished ‘Space Goddess’ there was incomplete material and some new songs being penned. It’s called ‘Bionic’ for obvious reasons, as I’m now more metal plate than human.  But there’s still lots of work to do to get that out next year. We have also been asked to do some live dates, so we are thinking about that possibility depending on my recovery. We would love to play LA and Japan.

ALOMR - Come to Manchester, too.
Lastly, what is your Good Dream Fancy Dress costume?

Cat - Last night's bedtime outfit was a wetsuit but that was rather Bad Dream. Possibly a onesie with a boned corset and fluffy slippers…One should always look one's best in the boudoir.

…

See? So much fun. A great story!
I honestly would never have guessed that Prefab Sprout would ever be mentioned in this blog.

Please go give Cat plenty of love on Twitter, the band have Facebook and a really fun website www.baddreamfancydress.com where the lyrics to the songs on ‘Space Goddess’ are translated to Klingon.
Still not sold? Go check out the album on Spotify.
